Dr Ian Martin MBBS, MRCPsych, Consultant Psychiatrist

GENERAL INFORMATION

Below is some information to help you understand my practice. As a Psychiatrist I am a medical doctor, and therefore able  to arrange investigations to exclude a physical cause for your symptoms, and also prescribe medication if appropriate.

 Routes of referral:
You may be referred by your GP, therapist or a Consultant from another specialty. Sometimes people will book an  appointment following a recommendation from another patient, and I am always happy to see individuals who organise  their own appointments (self refer).

 Reasons for referral:
There are a number of reasons why patients may seek an appointment. You may feel you are suffering from significant      stress in your work or personal life, and may recognise the signs or symptoms of a common psychiatric disorder such as  depression or anxiety. You may feel your use of alcohol or other substances has become harmful, or that you have begun  to experience memory problems.

People normally seek appointments when their symptoms have begun to impact negatively on their ability to function or  relate to people either professionally or personally.

 Initial Assessment:
Your first appointment will usually be for one hour, allowing time for you to tell me the details of any difficulties or  symptoms you have been experiencing, and for me to ask any specific additional questions which might assist in making a  diagnosis and planning treatment. You might prefer to attend your initial consultation with a family member or friend,  and I am always more than happy to accommodate this. With your agreement I will correspond with your GP, ensuring  they are informed regarding any treatment plans we make. I am always happy to provide you with copies of all  correspondence.
